Role Description The Lead Estimator role at Mainline HVAC is a full-time, on-site position based in Birmingham, AL. The Lead Estimator is responsible for reviewing plans and specifications, performing detailed quantity takeoffs, and preparing accurate cost estimates for HVAC and metal fabrication projects. This role coordinates with project managers, engineers, vendors, and subcontractors to collect pricing, validate scope, and ensure estimates reflect current material and labor costs. The Lead Estimator develops bid proposals, supports bid reviews, and participates in value engineering to improve project competitiveness and profitability. Daily tasks include maintaining estimating tools and databases, tracking historical cost data, and supporting handoff from preconstruction to project execution.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience estimating HVAC and metal fabrication projects, including reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency with estimating software, spreadsheets, and digital takeoff tools, along with strong math and analytical skills.
- Solid understanding of mechanical systems, building codes, and industry standards related to heating, cooling, and sheet metal work.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with internal teams, suppliers, subcontractors, and clients.
- Ability to prioritize multiple bids, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience leading or mentoring junior estimators or preconstruction team members is highly beneficial.
- High attention to detail, sound judgment, and a commitment to safety, quality, and ethical business practices.
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent field experience.
- Previous experience in HVAC contracting, mechanical construction, or metal fabrication estimating is strongly preferred.
