Why We Need You
Apex Underground's Residential & Short-Cycle Profit Center — water and sewer service repair and replacement, fire line work, and HOA/property-manager-driven projects — has historically delivered $5.8M+ annually. We need the right leader to get it back there and grow it.
You'll own this business from first call to final invoice: driving sales, running operations, developing a small team, and holding the P&L. Long-term, this profit center is a candidate to operate as a standalone entity. We want a GM who runs it that way from day one.
Your Regular Responsibilities
Sales & Business Development
- Own the full sales pipeline from first contact to signed proposal; manage hit rates and pipeline health in Hearth.
- Build relationships with real estate professionals, HOAs, property managers, fire protection companies, and home warranty/insurance networks.
- Lead seasonal campaigns — cold-weather fire line outreach, spring service surge, and proactive channel development.
Estimating & Proposals
- Review and approve all estimates before delivery; ensure margin compliance on every proposal.
- Oversee the proposal workflow — e-signature, deposit collection, and follow-up via Hearth.
- Track acceptance rates and lost-bid feedback; adjust pricing strategy accordingly.
Operations & Project Delivery
- Direct the Operations Manager on daily scheduling, crew deployment, and dispatch.
- Oversee the Project Engineer / Coordinator for permitting, 811 locates, bonds, licensing, and customer scheduling.
- Ensure job packets, JHAs, and change orders are complete before every job; drive post-job GP reviews and close gaps within 30 days.
- Resolve warranty claims, service complaints, and escalations in a way that protects the Apex brand.
P&L & Financial Management
- Own full profit center P&L — direct costs, overhead, equipment, and indirect expenses.
- Review WIP, billing triggers, and AR aging weekly; report forecast and backlog to the CEO biweekly.
- Eliminate cost leakage — unbilled change orders, material waste, and subcontractor pricing gaps.
Team & Systems
- Lead and develop estimators, project coordinators, engineers, and field crew leads.
- Drive utilization of HCSS HeavyJob and Hearth; consolidate disconnected spreadsheets into centralized systems.
- Maintain KPI dashboards — revenue, GP%, hit rate, crew productivity, AR days — reviewed monthly.
Your Team For Collaboration & Support
- You'll report to the CEO.
- You'll oversee a Project Engineer / Project Coordinator, and Field Crew Leads.
- You'll collaborate with field supervisors, accounting, and HR — shared across Apex's profit centers.
Expectations & Outcomes of Your Work
- Because you own the pipeline, the profit center hits $5.8M+ in revenue within your first year.
- Because you manage estimating with discipline, gross margins stay above 35% and post-job GP variance is minimal.
- Because you run tight operations, jobs are scheduled efficiently, billing is timely, and crews are productive.
- Because you operate it like a standalone business, financials are clean, processes are documented, and no single person is a bottleneck.
This Role is FOR You If
- You have 5+ years leading residential service operations (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, or water/sewer) with direct P&L accountability.
- You're as comfortable closing a proposal as reviewing a job cost report.
- You're tech-savvy — already using HCSS, ServiceTitan, Jobber, or a comparable platform to run your business.
- You build lasting relationships — repeat business and referrals follow you wherever you go.
- You treat the P&L like your own money and find cost leakage before it hits the bottom line.
This Role is NOT for You If
- You prefer a predictable environment — seasonal swings and competing priorities are constant.
- You avoid difficult conversations — with customers, subs, or your team.
- You're a pure operator with no sales instinct.
- You need someone else to manage your P&L.
