Role Description The Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Estimator is a full-time, on-site role based in San Rafael, CA. This position is responsible for reviewing plans and specifications, performing detailed quantity take-offs, and preparing accurate cost estimates for HVAC, piping, and plumbing scopes on commercial projects. Day-to-day work includes analyzing bid documents, soliciting and evaluating vendor and subcontractor quotes, and developing competitive proposals and budgets. The HVAC Estimator collaborates with project managers, engineers, and field teams to clarify design intent, validate constructability, and support value engineering efforts. The role also involves maintaining current knowledge of labor rates, material pricing, and industry standards, as well as tracking awarded projects against estimates to improve future pricing accuracy.
Qualifications
- Technical expertise in HVAC systems, including familiarity with dry side sheet metal and wet side piping design and installation.
- Knowledge of plumbing and piping systems relevant to commercial mechanical construction projects.
- Experience with project management and budgeting, including cost analysis, scheduling awareness, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proficiency with estimating software, digital take-off tools, and standard office applications (e.g., Excel, Word, PDF markup tools).
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and construction documents with strong attention to detail.
- Strong analytical, numerical, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interface professionally with clients, vendors, and team members.
- Relevant field or estimating experience in commercial mechanical contracting; prior work in the Bay Area market is a plus.
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, construction management, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
