The Junior Commercial HVAC Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for commercial HVAC projects including plan/spec, design-build, and negotiated work. This role analyzes blueprints, specifications, and other documentation to prepare time, cost, material, and labor estimates. The estimator works closely with project managers, engineers, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure competitive and profitable bids while maintaining company standards and project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Review project plans, specifications, and bid documents to determine project scope and requirements.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for HVAC systems including ductwork, piping, equipment, controls, and accessories.
- Prepare comprehensive cost estimates including labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and overhead.
- Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotes to ensure accurate pricing and competitive bids.
- Attend pre-bid meetings, job walks, and project review meetings when required.
- Identify potential risks, constructability issues, and cost-saving opportunities during the estimating process.
- Prepare and submit bid proposals in accordance with project deadlines.
- Collaborate with project managers and operations teams during project turnover to ensure a smooth transition from estimating to construction.
- Maintain relationships with suppliers, subcontractors, and general contractors.
- Maintain organized records of estimates, bids, and project documentation.
- Monitor market conditions, labor trends, and material pricing that may impact project costs.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in commercial HVAC estimating or related construction estimating experience.
- Strong knowledge of commercial HVAC systems, including ductwork, piping, chillers, RTUs, VRF systems, and controls.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
- Experience with estimating software (such as Trimble, FastPIPE, FastDUCT, Bluebeam, or similar).
- Proficiency in Google Sheets
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple bids and meet strict deadlines.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills.
