Summary
The Mechanical HVAC Engineer provides technical expertise and engineering support for HVAC systems on nuclear facility projects. This role supports design development, calculations, specifications, system modeling, and review of mechanical HVAC systems in accordance with nuclear codes, standards, regulatory requirements, and project-specific design criteria.
The position works closely with engineering, construction, project management, and quality teams to ensure HVAC systems meet safety, environmental, and operational requirements for nuclear facilities.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline is required.
- Perform engineering analysis, HVAC load calculations, equipment sizing, and system modeling for nuclear facilities.
- Develop and review design documents including mechanical drawings, specifications, data sheets, and engineering deliverables.
- Ensure HVAC system designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and nuclear regulatory requirements.
- Support development of ventilation system control strategies, filtration requirements, and system classifications specific to nuclear projects.
- Provide technical support during procurement, fabrication, installation, and testing of HVAC equipment.
- Review vendor documents, submittals, and technical data for mechanical and HVAC equipment.
- Interface with multi-discipline engineering teams to ensure design alignment across mechanical, electrical, civil, and nuclear safety requirements.
- Support hazard analyses, safety reviews, quality audits, and configuration management activities.
- Participate in field walkdowns, problem resolution, design changes, and construction support activities.
- Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, and documentation required for project execution.

- Ability to travel or support extended site assignments as project needs require.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deliverables in fast-paced environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting HVAC design for nuclear facilities, DOE, NRC-regulated facilities, or large industrial projects.
- Familiarity with nuclear HVAC design codes and standards such as ASME, ASHRAE, ANSI/ANS, and applicable NRC/DOE requirements.
- Experience with HVAC system modeling tools and mechanical engineering software.
- FE or PE licensure preferred.
- Experience with EPC project execution, engineering work processes, and quality documentation.
- Prior Fluor or large EPC contractor experience is beneficial.
