Mechanical Design Engineer

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design, development, and delivery of mechanical systems, structures, and components for advanced nuclear applications. This role will be responsible for developing engineering solutions from concept through production, including design, analysis, prototyping, testing, and commissioning.
Location: Rockville MD
Work Site Expectations: 4-5 days in office
Travel Expectations: up to 10% as needed
Hours: 8:00am-5:00pm ET, Mon-Fri
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and evaluate mechanical design concepts for structures, systems, and components used in nuclear facilities and equipment
- Define and document design requirements, interfaces, design bases, and acceptance criteria in collaboration with systems engineers and project stakeholders
- Perform engineering analyses to verify components and systems meet functional and technical requirements.
- Complete structural, thermal, hydraulic, and other engineering calculations using both hand calculations and analytical tools
- Develop and refine designs for pressure vessels, piping systems, reactor internals, fuel-handling equipment, and high-temperature materials
- Support design integration activities with internal teams, suppliers, and engineering partners
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models and engineering drawings
- Assess designs for manufacturability, assembly, installation, and maintenance requirements
- Prepare engineering deliverables, including calculations, technical reports, design documentation, and drawings
- Develop verification and validation (V&V) plans and support qualification of engineering tools and methodologies
- Ensure compliance with quality assurance, design control, and configuration management requirements
- Participate in design reviews and provide independent technical review of engineering deliverables
- Maintain effective communication and professional working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Support additional engineering activities as required
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and proficiency in engineering calculations
- Experience designing or developing mechanical systems, components, or assemblies
- At least one year of hands-on experience delivering hardware, equipment, or manufacturing processes in a production or project environment. Relevant internships, university design teams, or engineering projects will be considered
- Experience supporting manufacturing, assembly, testing, or commissioning activities
- Proficiency with CAD and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software, such as Siemens NX, SolidWorks, Creo (Pro/Engineer), Teamcenter, Windchill, or similar platforms
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience within the nuclear power industry
- Knowledge of nuclear plant design, construction, commissioning, or operations
- Experience working to ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (Section III and/or VIII)
- Familiarity with NRC regulations and licensing requirements for safety-related systems
- Experience applying ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, and other relevant industry standards
- Experience specifying and sizing mechanical plant equipment, including piping, HVAC systems, pumps, pressure vessels, valves, fire protection systems, ducting, and structural supports
- Hands-on experience with graphite or other non-metallic materials, manufacturing processes, tooling development, or assembly sequencing
- Experience overseeing the procurement and manufacture of pressure vessels or large fabricated mechanical components
