Summary
The HVAC Technician provides HVAC services with specific responsibility for identifying repair and/or replacement needs; installing, repairing, maintaining and upgrading HVAC systems and equipment; assisting other skilled trades; and ensuring that tools and materials are available at job site.
Essential Functions
- Diagnoses problems and/or failures in heating/air conditioning/refrigeration systems (e.g. boilers, pumps, controls, coils, electric motors, air compressors, etc.) for the purpose of identify equipment and/or systems repair and replacement needs.
- Installs heating/air conditioning/ventilation equipment and systems (e.g. pumps, electric motors, fans, controls, ductwork, etc.) for the purpose of providing enhanced and/or upgraded capabilities and a comfortable working environment.
- Operates computerized energy management systems for the purpose of setting up systems (e.g. time schedules, heating and cooling settings, pump operations, etc.) and troubleshooting system failures.
- Repairs various items, systems and/or components (e.g. boilers, furnaces, refrigeration units, kitchen equipment, pumps, drains, coils, electric motors, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring items are available and in safe working condition and providing comfort within facilities.
- Requests equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items to complete the necessary installation/repair.
- Performs routine and preventative maintenance as needed for the purpose of ensuring the ongoing functionality of HVAC systems
- Prepares written materials (e.g. repair status, activity logs, etc) for the purpose of documenting activities and/ or conveying information.
- Coordinates with other trades for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently.
- Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
- Maintains, assigned vehicle, tools and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in safe operating condition.
- Coordinates with assigned supervisor(s) for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently.
- Responds to emergency situations during and after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate concerns.

- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

- Able to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need and desire to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
- Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include, but are not limited to: Operating equipment and tools used in repair and maintenance of HVAC systems, planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
- Must be able to adhere to safety practices (e.g. proper handling of hazardous materials, proper use of personal protective equipment, proper lifting techniques, and proper use of equipment/tools, etc.)
Knowledge
- Be able to communicate clearly and/or present information to others; review and interpret highly technical information; understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
- Be able to perform basic math functions.
- Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: indoor air monitoring equipment and interpret resulting data; standards for design and construction; air conditioning and heating codes; hazards and safety precautions; and refrigerant handling and disposal.
Abilities
- Ability to work within a schedule and ability to schedule activities; collate data; and use job related equipment.
- Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances.
- Work with data utilizing specific, defined processes and operate equipment using a variety of standard methods.

Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; providing information and/or advising others and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: Significant lifting (75 lbs.), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; heights, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 60% walking and 30% standing. The job is performed under a range of temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Experience Job related experience/knowledge is required (5+ years)
Education High School diploma or equivalent
Graduate of a 2year vocational/technical program of instruction preferred
Job related certifications / training / licenses preferred
