Rivian is dedicated to creating a more sustainable future, and our Stanton Spring North Plant in Georgia will be instrumental in achieving this vision. This unique greenfield opportunity involves creating the state-of-the-art facility’s HVAC and Plumbing Design. This plant will employ over 7,000 people and serve as the production plant for Rivian’s Compact SUV, the R3, coming in 2028.
About the Role
As a Mechanical Engineer within our Facilities Production Design team, this person will have an incredible opportunity to create. This role will be responsible for the design and engineering support of all aspects of the Stanton Springs North Buildings and infrastructure. You will lead the design, specification, and execution of mechanical airside and hydronic systems for Rivian's vehicle production facilities. This role is not focused on designing Rivian vehicle components. This role is to design and deliver the building that supports the manufacturing equipment. This includes specialized environments such as spaces with chemical dispense and hazardous process exhaust, paint mix and spray applications, ISO clean rooms, building pressurization regimes, and central utility plants. You will work on production processes with cross-functional disciplines, including external stakeholders and clients, to solve complex problems and deliver technical projects.
Responsibilities
- System Design & Specification: Lead the design, specification, and execution of mechanical airside and hydronic systems for Rivian vehicle production, including specialized environments.
- Production Process Integration: Collaborate with cross-functional disciplines, including external stakeholders and clients, on production processes.
- Problem Solving & Project Delivery: Solve complex problems and deliver technical projects effectively.
- Code & Standard Application: Utilize knowledge of International Building Codes (IBC), central utility plants, psychrometric diagrams and calculations, thermodynamics, ASHRAE 55 thermal comfort, ASHRAE 62.1 ventilation requirements, and equipment sizing and rating requirements.
- Design Engineering Leadership: Lead basic and detailed design engineering activities for the mechanical scope of assigned projects.
- Documentation & Review: Prepare and review mechanical system control diagrams, air and hydronic flow diagrams, system submittals, and construction and as-built drawings.
- Installation Oversight: Oversee the installation of mechanical systems to ensure adherence to contract documents.
- Design Standards Development: Develop and maintain design standards for new projects and facilities.
- Technical Environment Adaptability: Thrive and contribute in a technically complex and fast-moving environment.
Qualifications
- Required:
- Travel: Ability to travel is needed for this role so this person can attend Design Workshops at Rivian’s Plant in Normal, Illinois, to Rivian’s future Midtown Atlanta office, and to the Stanton Springs North Plant in Social Circle, Georgia.
- Location: Ability to eventually work at Rivian’s Stanton Springs North Plant or the ability to relocate to the Social Circle area for the role. Note: Relocation would be provided by Rivian.
- Education: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering (or related discipline).
- Experience: At least 5 years of experience needed.
- Technical Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems and deliver technical projects.
- Building Design Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of building design, coordination, and delivery.
- Impact & Influence: Demonstrated ability to expand concepts beyond the project level and drive impact across a portfolio.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Experience working with cross-functional disciplines, including external stakeholders and clients.
- Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- CAD/BIM Proficiency: Experience working in BIM and other CAD environments.
- Adaptability: Desire to work in a technically complex and fast-moving environment.
- Preferred:
- Master's degree in a field of study relating to the built environment.
- Experience with applying sustainability principles to your work.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (or similarly recognized professional certification).
- Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, and/or other computer-aided drafting software.
- Experience with energy modeling and IECC/ASHRAE compliance methods.
- Experience with Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA).
- Experience with HVAC load modeling software (i.e., HAP, TRACE, eQuest, etc.).
- Experience with plumbing design.
- Greenfield experience is preferred but not required.
Pay range and compensation package
Salary Range for Rivian Applicants: $125,800 - $157,200
Note: Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law.
